The Sob Story Of A Girl With Wanderlust

A few weeks ago Kevin had pulled up Google Maps to explore and asked me to join him. Let me tell you something, Google Maps is a “dangerous” website. I don’t know about you, but it truly inspires Kevin and I, it makes us have this desire to expand our knowledge in different cultures, and our thirst for traveling only gets worse. Some might think that’s great! But when you can’t just up and hop on a plane to quench your travel thirst, the want need to travel gets much more intense.

Right before Kevin and I had started dating he visited his best friend who was currently stationed in Germany. Kevin never really had the desire to travel until he visited Europe. He told me the moment he had stepped foot in the airport of a new country, he knew he was going to love it. He enjoyed all the history that surrounded him and explained that just seeing how different everything was made him want to explore more and more. His friend took him to a place called The Grand Place which is in Brussels. If you click the link you’ll see that during the time the pictures were taken, the Flower Carpet was spread all throughout The Grand Place. Every night there is a concert and light show to accompany the Flower Carpet event which happens every year.

During the time Kevin was over there, “Let’s Dance Brussels” was going on and he said it definitely was a sight to see. He noticed that the people in Europe are more fun than Americans (of course, that’s strictly his opinion). He said the people over there know how to have a good time, they’re more friendly, and they seem to always have an event going on. Kevin and I were supposed to go to Europe for our honeymoon last year but due to the terrorist attacks that happened just two weeks prior to when we were supposed to jump on a plane, we decided to stay in the US. To this day, I am extremely sad that we didn’t go. We had so many fun things planned and just the thought that we missed out saddens me.

Kevin loved Belgium and Germany so much that he wanted to show me everything he saw. He wanted to share his love for Europe and wanted me to see it for myself. Our honeymoon was going to consist of two weeks in Europe. Five days staying in the Hilton Grand Place, five days staying in an apartment in Paris (the apartment we had booked was so close to the Eiffel Tower that it would have taken us three minutes to walk to it), and four days exploring Germany. We got married on December 2nd, therefore we planned on exploring all the Christmas markets in each place we stayed. One of the things I was looking forward to the most was The Grand Place Christmas Light & Sound ShowI’ve heard it’s like Disney’s Christmas lights on steroids and if you know me, you know that I ADORE Christmas lights anything to do with Christmas!

Kevin loves talking about his trip. Every time I ask him something about Europe his eyes light up and he begins to tell story after story after story. It’s adorable. The more I listen to him talk, the more we want to go. Alas, we must be patient as we both know that traveling now isn’t the right time, but Kevin always likes to remind me that “our time will come.” So for now I visit Google Maps. I watch YouTube videos of events going on in different countries and I dream of the day our time comes.

Through Google Maps I’ve visited Egypt, India, Australia, Ukraine…well a lot of places. Every time I get that travel bug itch I hop on the website and explore. You know something I’ve noticed? We are so SMALL compared to the world we live in. There is so much out there that we’ve never seen. So much we don’t know about. And I’ve gathered that just from visiting a walk through website that gives me the privilege to see some of the world without actually going. Imagine when I actually get to visit for real! Oh my. Of course I’d rather see everything in person but until that time comes, I shall stay content with visiting new places through a screen. Don’t worry, it’s not as depressing as it seems!

Well there ya have it, an article written about a girl with wanderlust who had to share her “sob story” of missing out on the opportunity to visit Europe last year. Sometimes I have this fear that we’ll never be able to go. That something will always stop us from seeing the world. Whether it be jobs, money, kids, time, etc.  But somehow I’m always reminded of Kevin’s saying, “our time will come.” Sometimes I have to force that fear away and be more trusting that we will have our chance and we’ll have the opportunity to travel more than just to the Florida springs (however fun they may be).

Have you been to a different country? What’s your favorite place to visit? Kevin and I have long list of places we’d like to go and I’d love to add more! Let me know below 🙂
