Unique & Affordable DIY Phone Case

I love adore phone cases. I know, it’s rather odd but it’s a little obsession of mine.  Back before my husband and I put ourselves on a budget and I upgraded my phone, I used to have a phone case for practically every day of the week. And of course one for every season and holiday. I had a new case that I could switch to whenever I wanted, cause well, I’m festive like that.

Since having my new phone I only had two phone cases and it was legit torture. I’m not even exaggerating, okay, maybe just a little. 😉 But seriously, I hated only having two phone cases to switch back and forth from. I refused to buy anymore because they got to be ridiculously  expensive.

My mom came up with this idea of having only one phone case and being able to simply switch the backgrounds. Don’t worry, I’ll explain. Well, it sparked my curiosity and as she explained her brilliant plan I got more and more excited with this unique idea. My mom is actually real big into scrap-booking so she has everything on hand that she so generously shares with me. However, for those of you who don’t have the scrap-booking skills, understand that this DIY project is completely affordable and totally doable for any non-crafty person.

The idea of this phone case is to purchase one clear phone case that you fancy. Some like sturdy phone cases and other’s prefer the thinner ones. Either way, I would check out Amazon or Ebay as they tend to have the most affordable ones!

This is my iPhone 6 Plus clear TPU phone case. TPU stands for thermoplastic polyurethane. Basically it’s the happy middle of having a plastic and silicon case. They’re my favorite as they don’t have that sticky-hair attracting feel like silicon would, but unlike a plastic case, it’s bendy.

Since I found them for close to $1 a piece, I “splurged” and bought a blue one as well!

I recommend buying a tempered glass screen protector though if you purchase a “flimsy” case. I prefer this one.

Look at all the fun phone backgrounds I currently have! As you can see, I LOVE glitter!

Next thing you’re going to do is take measurements of your phone. We have found that the easiest way to do this is to measure the back of your phone and keep cutting the paper down until you have a size that will fit inside the case as shown below. To create the edges on the bottom of the paper, use a corner punch.

And that’s it! Literally, it’s that easy, affordable, and so cute! If you buy a case that’s large enough, you’ll be able to not only use paper, but you’ll be able to add some extra things like some pop up stickers and whatnot. Now I have an unlimited amount of backgrounds and I only had to purchase ONE case. How crazy is that?! 🙂

Below is everything that my mom and I used to create her masterpiece of a phone case.

Happy Crafting!!

  3. So cute!! I wanted to make my own cell phone case but these clear plastic cases broke too easily. I need a otter box on my phone lol!

    1. Aw, yeah I noticed a lot of people need the Otter Boxes on their phones. It’s a bummer the clear cases don’t work as well for some people. 🙁

  5. This is a great tip! I use my phone for everything and it’s really important to me because it’s my camera when I travel. But I don’t have the money to upgrade the case all the tip. It would be really fun to decorate it myself like this! Thanks!
