Blueberry Picking At Its Finest

“Tom West Blueberries”

Well ya’ll, I am proud to say that I went blueberry picking for the very first time! Besides an orange, this is actually the first time I remember picking fruit right off the bush or tree. I have Aldi to thank for that. 😉

I went to “Tom West Blueberries” with my Mom, Brother, and Grandma. It was a gorgeous day, more on the hot side (typical Florida), but when the breeze kicked up, it was absolutely beautiful.

Address: 324 E. Orlando Avenue

I knew blueberries were good for you, but I didn’t know just HOW GOOD until I looked further into it! Click here to learn about the “10 Proven Benefits of Blueberries.”

Naturally, since everything is home grown, “Tom West Blueberries” will have an off season. Meaning they will be closed for a part of the year. You can either call or their website should give you that information.

When we first showed up we all noticed this constant sound of birds. One of the guy’s who worked there explained that it was a recording of birds on repeat. It was a warning to the birds who were thinking about picking the berries off of the bushes. It was the sounds of a hawk attacking a bird which scared them away. They said they haven’t had a problem with birds since they placed the recording all over the grove. Who knew?!

They sold blueberry syrup, jam, and even blueberry honey! You can buy blueberries that were already picked which cost a little more than if you were to pick them yourself. I definitely recommend picking them yourself. It’s an experience and they said if you pick them right off the bush they will taste better than if you buy the ones already picked. So, WHY NOT?!

The bucket I’m holding is a six pound bucket.

If you pick the blueberries yourself, it costs $4.00 per pound (5 dollars per pound if you buy them already picked) which is clearly labeled on the bucket. After you’ve gotten your fill of finding the ripest and plumpest looking berries, they will weigh the bucket and you’ll be one step closer to eating the best blueberry pancakes in your life!

If you live around the Orlando/Ocoee area, I would definitely recommend checking out Tom West Blueberries. A fun experience indeed!

Have you picked blueberries before? Where did you pick them? What is something other than blueberries that is “fun” to pick?! Let me know 🙂

  1. Whoa, that sounds like a great price! Even Aldi blueberries are typically prett expensive (aside from the $1 sale weeks!) The $20 price for that whole bucket sounds like a major bargain! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Yes, right?! I’m now a fan of picking my own fruit. They’re so good too! I’m glad to hear you’re a fellow Aldi shopper as well. 😀

  2. When we lived in Brooksvile they had MANY farms in the area that were U-picks. We went around and picked peaches, strawberries, greenbeans, broccoli, and a few other things. It was a fun day, saved us a ton of money, and we all ate a little healthier! Check out this website to find other farms you can pick your own fruit/veges from: http://www.pickyourown.org/. 😀
